From Djerba to New York, by way of France. Hanen Meknassi has been painting Tunisia for over twenty years: the sailors of Djerba, women draped in the alleys of the medina, souks where light slips in through a window or an open roof. Winner of first prize at the Olivet art fair in France against 100 artists from around the world, and twice exhibited at the United Nations headquarters, she remains attached to her island: part of the sales of her paintings supports local initiatives. Three signatures run through her work: the sea, a symbol of hope. Yellow, a quest for light. The mirror, an act of freedom.
